How We Choose

What we read, what we weigh, and why a pick earns its place on these pages.

South Ocean Living is a magazine of curation. We do not run a laboratory, and we do not test products ourselves. What we do is read: closely, widely and with a skeptical eye, so that what reaches these pages has earned its place. We read the fine print so you don't have to.

What we read

Every recommendation is built from published evidence, and we name where it came from.

  • Certifier databases. When a product carries a seal, we look it up on the certifier's own records, under the brand and product name, and note the date we checked.
  • Makers' own disclosures. Full ingredient lists, material and fiber content, finishes, coatings and country of manufacture, as the maker publishes them.
  • Published test reports. Laboratory and third-party reports that a maker or an independent body has made public, read for what they actually measured.
  • Government and standards bodies. Regulators, public health agencies and standards organizations, for what a label is required to say and what a standard covers.
  • Editorial and expert reviews. Reputable publications and qualified experts, credited by name.
  • Customer reviews, in aggregate. Verified buyer reviews read for patterns, such as durability complaints or sizing issues, never quoted as our own experience.

How a pick earns its place

Each candidate is weighed against the Clean Standard: disclosed materials and ingredients, recognized certifications confirmed on the certifier's records, and claims that hold up in the fine print. Then come the questions any discerning reader would ask: is it beautiful, is it well made, will it survive salt air and a long Florida summer, and is it worth the price? We would rather recommend fewer things we can stand behind than many we cannot.

What we never do

We never claim personal use or testing we have not done, and we never write fake reviews or invent testimonials. When an editor has used something or stayed somewhere, the piece says so and says how it came about. Otherwise, our view rests on the sources we cite.

Picks first, commissions second

We decide our picks before we check whether a brand pays a commission. Commission never moves a pick up or down. Every affiliate link, gifted product, hosted stay, sponsorship and discount is disclosed near the top of the page and in every caption and video.

Claims, attributed

When we repeat a claim, whether a maker's, a certifier's or a researcher's, we attribute it to its source and link to it. We do not make our own scientific claims, and we never make health or disease claims: nothing on these pages treats, cures or prevents anything. We are not doctors, and nothing here is medical advice. If a topic touches your health, please talk to your doctor.

Dates and sources on every piece

Each story shows a "Last checked" date and a list of its sources. Certifications lapse and products are reformulated, so we recheck our leading guides at least every six months and date every update at the top of the piece.

How we use AI

AI tools help us research, organize sources and draft. They never supply experience or opinion. Our editors review, verify and approve every word before it is published.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and say so, with a dated note at the top of the piece explaining what changed. To flag an error, write to us at email.
